10k Temperature Sensor: NTC Curve & OEM Selection

A “10k temperature sensor” often refers to an NTC thermistor with a nominal resistance of 10 kΩ at a specified reference temperature. The resistance rating alone does not identify the thermistor curve, tolerance, package or probe assembly. Confirm the reference temperature and manufacturer data before matching a sensor to a controller.

What does 10k mean for an NTC sensor?

For an NTC thermistor, resistance decreases as temperature rises. “10k” describes the nominal resistance at a stated point, commonly 25°C in many product families, but the reference point must be verified for the specific part. Two 10k thermistors can produce different resistance values at the same operating temperature if their beta values or full resistance-temperature curves differ.

Compare the manufacturer’s resistance-temperature table across the complete operating range. Check resistance tolerance, beta value and the temperature interval used to define beta. See our NTC thermistor beta value guide for how beta relates to the curve.

Match the thermistor to the measurement circuit

Check the controller’s input range, reference or bias resistor, measurement current and conversion method. Confirm that the selected curve matches the lookup table or equation used by the firmware. A nominal 10k value alone does not ensure accurate readings. Also consider wiring resistance, thermal contact, calibration requirements and self-heating in the final assembly.

Choose the right sensor package and installation

Define what the sensor measures and where it will be mounted. A bead, encapsulated sensor or probe can have different response and environmental characteristics. Specify dimensions, mounting method, cable length, connector, insulation and exposure to moisture, vibration or chemicals. Validate response time and temperature performance in the intended installation.

OEM specification checklist

  • Nominal resistance and reference temperature, with the required curve or beta interval.
  • Operating range and resistance/beta tolerance targets.
  • Controller input details, conversion method and calibration or verification needs.
  • Sensor form, dimensions, mounting drawing, cable and connector requirements.
  • Environmental conditions, sample quantity and production forecast.
